IRS Returns: Make Your 1040 Choice!
There are many types of IRS returns for many kinds of taxpayer situations. Sometimes, a taxpayer is required to fill out one type over another. Other times, taxpayers find that some IRS returns benefit their particular circumstances more than others. Each has its own advantages, but how do you know which IRS returns you should file? This page is a quick guide to choosing from the many IRS returns out there.
1040 IRS Returns1040 forms are the most detailed and comprehensive annual IRS returns available to individual taxpayers. If you have a long list of deductions and credits you plan on using, you should choose this form to make sure your IRS returns are as accurate as possible.
1040-A IRS Returns1040-A forms are somewhat less complicated IRS returns for those who do not need a 1040 form to report all of their information. You can file 1040-A IRS returns, if you meet all of the following conditions.
- Only sources of income fit the 1040-A requirements.
- Only adjustments to income fit the 1040-A requirements.
- Do not itemize deductions.

1040-ES IRS ReturnsIf you are a self-employed individual, you need to file and pay quarterly estimated taxes. You must pay at least 90% of the tax shown for that particular quarter on last year's tax return. Not filing these IRS returns can lead to underpayment penalties.
1040-X IRS ReturnsIf you wish to amend previously filed IRS returns, you need to file a form 1040-X for each return. You will need to mail each 1040-X form with their respective IRS returns, and other related schedules and forms.
1040-NR & 1040-NREZIf you are a nonresident alien required to file IRS returns, you will either need to file a 1040-NR or a 1040-NREZ. 1040-NREZ IRS returns are the simpler version of 1040-NR IRS returns. The 1040-NREZ requirements are very similar to the ones for the 1040-EZ IRS returns, with only a few additions.
